How To Install Windows 11 Without Microsoft Account

In order to install Windows 11 without a Microsoft Account, you will have to cut the internet from the computer during installation.

There are a few different methods to do this, depending on whether your computer connects to the internet via an ethernet cable or over a wireless network.

Method 1 – LAN (Ethernet Cable Connected PC)

  • Once the installation process has started, disconnect the cable once you reach the screen prompt asking you to sign in to your Microsoft Account.
  • With the cable disconnected, click on the button that says “Create One” and the setup will detect that there is no internet. It will open a screen asking you to enter a username for this PC.
  • Go ahead and enter a username and password (if you do not want a password at this stage, leave blank and click Next).
  • Once you have cleared the enter password screen, reconnect the ethernet cable. This will allow setup to go looking for driver downloads and critical updates before setup completes.

Method 2 – Wireless Using Flight Mode

Most newer computers have a Flight Mode button (airplane icon) on the function keys on your keyboard. Some laptops will have a Wi-Fi icon on one of the keys. This actual key varies on different models.

Example – Asus is usually F2. HP is usually F12. Lenovo is usually F5 (or Fn + F5).

Instructions similar to above:

  • With Wi-Fi enabled, run setup, enter your wireless details, proceed to screen asking for Microsoft Account details and at this point disable internet with keyboard button.
  • Click on the onscreen button that says “Create One” (to create a Microsoft Account) and the setup will detect that there is no internet. It will open a screen asking you to enter a username for this PC.
  • Go ahead and enter a username and password (if you do not want a password at this stage, leave blank and click Next).
  • Once you have cleared the enter password screen, enable wireless again. This will allow setup to go looking for driver downloads and critical updates before setup completes.

Method 3 – Cut Network Flow

This method applies to computers connecting wirelessly that will not allow you to disable internet with a keyboard hotkey.

(Video instructions for this method below).

Reasons For Installing Windows 11 Without A Microsoft Account

You may have your own reasons for wanting to install Windows 11. Here are just a few reasons why some users may prefer to work on a local account:

Repair Shop or Helping Family & Friends

Perhaps you are setting up the computer on behalf of someone else, whether it be as a repair service or assisting family or friends. It is bad practice to ask for anyone else’s login credentials. It is even worse practice to setup a Microsoft Account on someone else’s behalf as this involves entering personal information & account recovery information.

Recovering a Microsoft Account that has been setup on someone’s behalf can be incredibly difficult.

Data Protection Concerns

By attaching a computer to a Microsoft Account, data such as files and saved passwords are shared across other devices that you own. This may not be preferable in some cases.

Security

Similar to data protection concerns. If your password is compromised, the danger is huge. If a scammer gets your username and password combination, this could allow them to launch an attack on all of your online accounts.

This is something that tech companies are currently working on a solution to. Microsoft in recent years introducing the PIN login system. Furthermore they are working on a system which will end password access completely.

The new passwordless systems are already being rolled out.
