How to manually reset Brother toner when you get the alert "Replace Toner".

Manually Reset Brother Toner From “Replace Toner”

Here is how to manually clear and reset the “Replace Toner” message from a Brother laser printer.

You may be in the middle of printing, with the print quality absolutely fine and you know that the toner shouldn’t need changed yet.

However, up pops that dreaded “Replace Toner” alert. When this happens, the unit will stop printing and you cannot resume until you change to a new toner.

This may be quite inconvenient if you don’t have a spare handy or you only have a few more sheets to print out to complete the print job that you are running.

Searching for a solution to this on the internet will lead you to all sorts of button combination procedures to reset the toner. However, some printer models don’t have multiple buttons. In fact some models including the HL-1112, (using TN1050 toner) have only got a power button.

Instructions & Error Explained

These instructions will result in tricking the printer to “thinking” that you have in fact inserted a new cartridge. It will clear the “Replace Toner” message and reset it to 100% full on the counter.

However, keep a close eye on the quality of the prints that you turn out afterwards. As soon as you see the quality fade, it is time to change over to a new toner.

Quite often this mishap is caused when using compatible toner cartridges. The clock counter that is inbuilt, doesn’t register accurately.

Using this method is economical and also environmentally friendlier as you are not disposing of toners quite as often. You are using them right up until their actual end of life rather than changing them simply because an onscreen message tells you to.

Here Are Instructions To Manually Reset “Replace Toner”

Time needed: 5 minutes

Manually Reset Brother Toner Cartridge

  1. Remove the drum and toner.

Separate the toner and drum by pressing the small blue or green lever. Note: handling toner cartridges can get messy so use a protective cover on your desk.

  2. Locate The Gears

Mostly these are on the left, on some toners they are on the right. The gear is a small cog.

  3. Rotate Clockwise

Gently rotate the gear clockwise. Do not rotate all the way round. Less than a quarter of the way round will be enough.

  4. Insert Toner & Drum Into Printer

Once you have reinserted the toner and the drum into the printer, you may have to switch the printer completely off and back on. The reset is complete.
