Stay Safe On Public Wifi

Quick Guide To Stay Safe On Public Wifi

Most homes have ditched Ethernet cables and rely solely on Wireless connections for internet access. Most modern routers have very good security to ensure you have a secure connection.

When we are so used to connecting to our secure networks at home, it’s easy to forget to take extra precautions when using public WiFi.pubwf

Whether in a restaurant, cafe or even on the train, public WiFi is available but should always be used with caution.

Guard Your Data As Well As Your Wallet / Purse!

Cyber-criminals have many ways of accessing your computer and your information if they are connected to the same network as you. For example on public transport you may subconsciously take the usual precautions to protect personal belongings being stolen by pickpocket thieves. But do you protect yourself from a criminal sitting in the next carriage stealing your passwords and personal data?

Here are a few simple steps to add extra protection to your computer when connecting to public WiFi.

• Turn Off File Sharing
Instructions: Right-click on the network icon in the taskbar. Open Network & Sharing Centre. Next look for Advanced Sharing Settings and from here turn off File & Printer Sharing.

• Avoid Online Banking or Shopping
Unless you are absolutely certain that your computer is secure and the correct security measures are in place, logging into your bank or entering bank card details on a public network is a high risk. This includes online shopping gateway services such as Paypal & Worldpay.

• Use a VPN for Added Encryption
If you really have to send confidential information over a public network then you may consider a VPN (Virtual Private Network). If you work for large organisations that have workplace wifi then you will already be familiar with VPN’s and have your own login service. Otherwise there are many services that offer premium protection via a VPN wherever you connect to the internet. Here is a link to some of the popular VPN services.

• Fool Keyloggers
This is an extra precautionary measure which can be used when entering passwords on a public network. If you are “very security conscious” then this can be used at home when logging into your online banking service.
The process simply involves intentionally entering the incorrect password (slightly) and then amending it to confuse a keylogger. (see link below) Or to combine typing on the actual keyboard with entering some characters using the on-screen keyboard. To access the on-screen keyboard simple press the Start Menu (Windows flag) and type OSK.
