There is a glitch in FIFA 22 with controller settings which isn’t a major issue and can be easily switched back.
The game controllers switch to Alternate mode on their own. This could happen at any time, either when loading a new game or during a game that is already running.
The shoot and lob buttons swap across and other buttons such as LB, LT, RT & RB switch around to their opposite positions.
It’s almost like there is an alternate configuration that may be easier for left-handed players to use.
How To Switch FIFA 22 Controller back To Classic (Default)
This fix will work wherever you are in the interface of the game. Either within a loaded game, during a game or at the front-end welcome screen.
Reset Gamepad Controller Back To Classic in FIFA 22
- Go to Settings / Customize / Controller Settings
- Within Controller Settings screen, press either LB, LT, RT or RB to navigate to the screen that says Controller Settings / Attack / Preset.
(As pictured below)
- Within this screen, use the left-hand joystick controller to move the preset from Alternate to Classic.
- Press B (red) to exit and the settings will save.

Cause Of The Problem
There is likely a gamepad button combination to switch controllers from Classic to Alternate during a game. You may have accidentally pressed this combination while playing.
As with many glitches within games, these settings were likely coded in by the developer but haven’t been removed.
Problem Solved
If at any time the issue reoccurs, simply jump in to Settings (even during a game) and switch back over using the LT, LB, RR, RB to get to preset and Left Joystick to switch to Classic.
Platform Support
Whether you are running FIFA 22 on Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch or Windows PC, the issue can be fixed the same with the instructions above. However the display screen may differ slightly than the one pictured depending on the platform. The exit to save button will be the button that you always use to exit.
