Google Chrome Ending Support On Windows Vista

Users running the Windows Vista operating system this week may be have noticed a warning message in the Google Chrome web browser saying that support is ending soon.

The warning message suggests that you should “upgrade to a new operating system”.

This is not quite as straight forward as it seems. 

vista_logo2Upgrading a Vista machine to the current operating system (Windows 10) will be expensive. In a lot of cases, more than the value of the computer.

Upgrading to a new operating system (from Vista to W10) also involves sourcing new drivers to ensure the computer runs properly. Most hardware manufacturers will continue support to the next OS (operating system), but not for the next 3. (W7, W8.1, W10).

  • Microsoft will continue to provide updates and security patches for Vista until April 2017.
  • Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) support ended in January 2016.
  • Google Chrome will continue to work after the April 2016 cut off. However you will be using legacy software which will no longer update.
