Tech News: Passwords Could Be A Thing Of The Past

I’ve been keeping an eye on the tech news to follow the development of the new Windows 10 system which is due out later in the year.

The 3 core changes that Microsoft are keen to emphasise are Cortana (a Siri like personal assistant), Spartan (a completely revamped version of Internet Explorer) and FIDO (Fast Identity Online)

Looking for now into FIDO. The idea is great and the technology is already in use. FIDO involves users logging into secure devices or sites without the use of passwords.

We are always being warned to strengthen weak passwords but soon passwords could be a thing of the past all together. Logging into devices using eye scanning or fingerprint authentication is already in use in devices such as the iPhone 6. Windows devices running this technology rely of third party programs and apps to use this existing hardware. With Windows 10 introducing this feature as part of the operating system we can expect a big shift in the way that we log on to computers and into secure sites in the future.

Companies such as Paypal, Google and Bank of America are already accepting FIDO logins. Others will follow soon with Windows 10 pushing this forward.

On the downside from our point of view, I am not looking forward to repairing these machines. The thought of having to call customers back in a dozen times to have their eye scanned every time we need to reboot their computer!
