Some models of HP laptops including HP ProBooks come preinstalled with a DTS audio control panel which has known glitches with Windows 10 if the computer has been upgraded from another operating system.
Problem Summary
The issue is that the inbuilt speakers work OK. But when connecting headphones in to the jack socket the audio doesn’t appear to work. Altering the settings within Windows audio settings only fixes the problem until you disconnect the headphones and reconnect. The settings seem to revert.
Reason Summary
The reason is that the DTS software has control over the audio and overrides any settings that you make.
Fix
The fix for this is simple.
- Go to Control Panel (right-click Start button to access CP)
- In Programs click Uninstall a program
- In the list, select HD Realtek Audio and unistall then restart computer when prompted.
This removes DTS Control Panel and allows Windows to control the sound. You should find the problem is resolved without any further settings adjustments.
More Information
The actual drivers for the Realtek audio device are not removed when unistalling this way.
Now when you plug in your headphones and disconnect them, Windows audio settings will detect which output to send the sound to.
