This is how to fix problems when installing Windows 10 Updates as the October 2020 update rolls out.
The October 2020 update is known as version 20H2.
If your system fails to install this update, please follow the following steps:
Time needed: 15 minutes
SFC Scan & Windows 10 Update Troubleshooter. Rebooting After Each.
- Launch Windows Powershell (Admin)
Right-click the Start Menu and open Windows Powershell (Admin)
- Run SFC Scan
Type the following text and hit Enter (Return Key). sfc /scannow
- Reboot
Click the Power Button icon in the Start Menu and choose Restart. (Shutting down and booting up “from cold” will not have the same effect).
- Click Start Menu and open Settings
Start / Settings (the cog icon). In the search field within Settings type Troubleshoot and open Troubleshoot Settings.
- Windows Update – Troubleshooting
Run the Troubleshoot console for Windows Updates. Follow the step-by-step instructions.
- Reboot
On competition of the Troubleshooter console running, reboot again. Shut down & restart isn’t as good as Restart.
Big Difference Between Shut Down & Restart
This post explains the huge difference between Shut Down & Restart.
The rule of “have you switched it off and back on again” now carries very different results due to a feature called Fast Boot. I’ll explain in a post in the near future.
